In what feels like the blink of an eye, the season changed from summer to fall! The leaves have fallen off the trees, there is a certain crispness in the morning air, and the tree outside my window is beginning to bear bright orange persimmons.
Luckily for me, the San Francisco Bay Area boasts some of its best weather in the fall. September and October are still warm, sunny, and dry in my town of Oakland, meaning weekends are still full of outdoor activities!
One of my favorite Friday night activities this time of year is Off the Grid, which takes place outside of the Oakland Museum of California. A bunch of food trucks line up so you can sample anything from Peruvian food, to Filipino fusion, to hamburgers and BBQ, Korean food, lobster rolls, southern comfort food, Indian food, different kinds of dessert, and much more!
Oaklanders young and old come out to try the food, get half price admission to the museum, and sample local beer and wine.
To top it off, there’s live music and dancing! When you live in a city as big and diverse as Oakland, its these sorts of events that really bring the community together.
My latest weekend favorite is starting the day with a pastry and coffee at the newly reopened Grand Fare Market.
With its delicious selection of goodies (with a focus on locally-sourced ingredients), and patio seating (offering both shade and heat lamps, depending on the weather), a light breakfast at Grand Fare Market is a great way to enjoy the fall weather.
Be sure to peruse the cheese and charcuterie, prepared foods, and flowers while there!
Farmers’ markets are a great way to celebrate the season because the produce changes with the seasons. Fall is a wonderful time to visit the Grand Lake Farmers Market!
There are an overwhelming number of local farmers, plus many booths boasting specialty foods and artisanal goods. Add the live entertainment, and you could spend your whole morning exploring and eating your way through the market.
Fall is also a great time for festivals in Oakland! All sorts of events take place at Jack London Square, from outdoor movie viewings and dancing under the stars, to a Halloween festival for dogs (yes, I’ve taken my dog to Boo, Bark, Brews & Bites!). This past weekend was the Eat Real Festival, a good food celebration with an emphasis on sustainability and artisanal food and drink. The event was absolutely packed, and for good reason. There were dozens of food booths and food trucks, as well as beer and wine tastings. (What can I say, we like our food in Oakland!)
Festivals are another great way to bring the community together to enjoy the beautiful Oakland fall weather!
And, of course, no fall is complete without spending an afternoon rooting for the home team. Go A’s!!!
